Nurse Leaders in Advocacy

AONL’s Nurse Leaders in Advocacy program is a national network of issue ambassadors dedicated to advancing federal policies on behalf of AONL. As an NLIA member, you will have the opportunity to engage with the AONL Advocacy Team to educate and inform lawmakers and their staff about the valuable role of nursing in protecting and caring for local communities. Given the opportunity to join this powerful network of nurse leaders, you will be expected to devote 1-3 hours a month to volunteer-based ambassador responsibilities.

• Be an AONL member in good standing. 
• Reside within the congressional district/state you represent as a key contact. 
• Complete the AONL Advocacy Academy online and in-person educational program. 
• Agree to conduct at least one interaction with the assigned congressional office quarterly (minimum of four per year). 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

• Attend AONL advocacy days and attend AONL-sponsored in-district engagement activities with your assigned congressional office.
• Report all interactions with Congressional offices on this form. 
• Participate in advocacy training sessions to prepare you to be an effective advocate and communicate AONL's public policy priorities and positions.
• Lead your local network of advocates through a variety of coordinated actions.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for your assigned federal representative or senator and engage in at least four high-impact interactions per year.
• Engage in other advocacy-related activities each month, such as calling or sending personal messages to staff, reaching out to local media, interacting with members of Congress via social networks and recruiting and mentoring new advocates for NLIA.
