2025 FAONL Spotlight: Katie Boston-Leary

What motivated you to apply for the FAONL designation?
I applied to satisfy my need for excellence in nursing and healthcare. I am a lifelong member of AONL and a progressive nurse leader that has done a lot and it just seemed appropriate that I apply. I also have a few colleagues that applied who also encouraged me to apply. It really seemed to be more about timing to cement my legacy and reflect the work I have done over the years to build nurse leaders and to be a strong leader in healthcare. I also had a mentor that encouraged me to apply and I had a peer that applied that received her fellowship last year which also motivated me to apply.

How has being an FAONL designee impacted your leadership journey and leadership style?
It has been wonderful and so satisfying. To be recognized by this organization and to be "seen" by peers as a fellow means the world to me. It is also validating and I am proud to wear my pin and include FAONL on my signature line.

What value have you received by achieving your FAONL designation (could be professional growth, personal connections, etc.)?
I have more personal connections and acknowledgement as a strong nurse leader. I had a few friends that recorded and posted the ceremony and that generated a lot of interest and intrigue.

What advice would you give to someone working towards achieving FAONL status?
Do it. Being a FAONL is additive and has augmentative value for nurse leaders. As long as you review the criteria and the questions, start your journey! Surround yourself with great mentors to assist you with the journey. It is such a privileged and small group to be a part of. It is an honor to be a FAONL.
