2026 FAONL Spotlight: Brandy Mathews
What motivated you to apply for the FAONL designation?
My involvement in AONL committees and service on both the AONL and AONL Foundation boards has had a profound impact on my professional growth and leadership journey. It truly has been some of the most meaningful experiences of my career. Pursuing fellowship seemed like a logical next step in my continued dedication to contributing to the nursing profession and advancing the work of AONL.
How has being an FAONL designee impacted your leadership journey and leadership style?
Being inducted as a Fellow of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership is both an honor and a deeply meaningful milestone in my professional journey. Fellowship signifies not only recognition of individual achievement but also serves to strengthen my commitment to elevating the nursing profession. As health systems continue to face workforce challenges, financial pressures, and rapid transformation, induction as an AONL Fellow reinforces my sense of responsibility to mentor future leaders, contribute to national conversations that shape the future of nursing and healthcare delivery, and to continue to support the efforts of AONL in a meaningful way.
What value have you received by achieving your FAONL designation?
This recognition brought me a strong sense of personal accomplishment, not only for the individual recognition but also for the opportunity it creates to further influence and support nursing leadership. I hope that it serves to encourage other nurse leaders, especially those with whom I work more closely in my organization and in my state AONL chapter, to become more engaged in their professional organization.
What advice would you give to someone working towards achieving FAONL status?
For those pursuing the Fellow designation in the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, my strongest advice is to confidently own and articulate your impact. This is not the time to be modest—be intentional about highlighting your accomplishments and clearly connecting your personal contributions to meaningful outcomes. Your leadership story matters, and demonstrating how you have influenced change, improved results, and advanced the profession is essential. Equally important is approaching the application process with intention. Take full advantage of the resources AONL provides, as they are designed to guide and strengthen your submission. Engaging a mentor is invaluable; their insight, feedback, and perspective can help you refine your narrative and ensure your application fully reflects your experience and impact. Thoughtful preparation and a willingness to seek guidance can make a significant difference in presenting a strong, compelling application.
