2026 FAONL Spotlight: Heidi Shedenhelm
What motivated you to apply for the FAONL designation?
At a pivotal moment in my leadership journey, pursuing fellowship felt both affirming and aspirational. The process invited deliberate reflection on the impact of my work overtime and the role AONL has played in shaping my growth as a nurse leader. Applying for the FAONL designation marked a deliberate moment of alignment within my leadership journey.
How has being an FAONL designee impacted your leadership journey and leadership style?
Being named an FAONL designee has sharpened my leadership focus and reinforced the importance of intentional engagement and continuous learning. It has strengthened my connection to a broader community of nurse leaders while encouraging disciplined thinking about how nursing can continue to shape care transformation. As a result, my leadership approach is more strategic and outward‑facing, rooted in curiosity and sustained by a commitment to developing others.
What value have you received by achieving your FAONL designation?
While I anticipated the FAONL designation would be professionally rewarding, it has added value beyond my expectations by opening new doors and fostering meaningful connections with nurse leaders across the profession. These new relationships have broadened my perspective, enriched my leadership practice, and reinforced the value of continued engagement and growth.
What advice would you give to someone working towards achieving FAONL status?
For those working toward FAONL, my advice is simple: pursue it with intention and give yourself time to reflect along the way. The process is rigorous, but it is also deeply rewarding, offering an opportunity to see the impact of your leadership and professional growth over time. Lean into the journey—it is as valuable as the designation itself.
