2026 FAONL Spotlight: Leslie Norman

What motivated you to apply for the FAONL designation?
I was motivated to apply for the FAONL designation because it represents a pinnacle of leadership recognition for nurse executives committed to advancing the profession through service, scholarship, and policy influence. My career has been grounded in the belief that nursing leadership must extend beyond individual organizations and into the systems that shape practice, workforce development, and equitable access to care. FAONL aligns with that vision by honoring leaders who elevate nursing’s voice at the state and national levels.

How has being an FAONL designee impacted your leadership journey and leadership style?
Being a FAONL designee has deepened my responsibility to lead with intention, visibility, and strategic influence. It has broadened my perspective on the systems that shape nursing and strengthened my commitment to mentorship, policy engagement, and long term workforce development. The designation has also sharpened my leadership style by reinforcing the importance of elevating diverse voices and fostering environments where innovation and accountability coexist.

What value have you received by achieving your FAONL designation?
Achieving FAONL has expanded my professional network to include leaders shaping the future of nursing across the country, enriching my thinking and opening doors to collaboration. It has affirmed my work in nursing regulation, advocacy, and organizational leadership while strengthening my confidence in influencing systems level change. The designation has also provided a meaningful sense of belonging within a community grounded in excellence, integrity, and service.

What advice would you give to someone working towards achieving FAONL status?
Approach the journey with authenticity, intentionality, and a commitment to service, recognizing that FAONL reflects sustained contributions rather than titles alone. Engage deeply in professional organizations, seek opportunities to influence policy, invest in mentorship, and document the impact, not just the activity of your work. Most importantly, pursue the designation to meaningfully shape the future of our profession.
