Improved Efficiency: Adding LPNs to a Team-Based Care Model

Throughout the health care field, everyone is managing the challenge of maintaining a high level of patient care with fewer clinical staff. An assessment of  RN work activities in our med-surg specialty units at UPMC (formerly named University of Pittsburgh Medical Center)  indicated more time was spent performing indirect care, rather than direct patient care (Perpetua et al., 2023). We also found that RNs were frequently under-delegating nonclinical tasks because their care team nursing assistants (NAs) and patient care technicians (PCTs) were already occupied with other nonclinical tasks. A better understanding of the workflow and workload inefficiencies was essential to develop a new team-based care model that had more capacity to deliver high-quality patient care with greater efficiency.
