Abstract | New Fellowship and Preceptor Models: Creating Tools to Recruit and Retain

 

 

As nurse leaders, recruitment and retention are at the forefront of nearly every conversation. New obstacles have presented challenges in recruitment strategies aimed at enticing nurses to leave behind contract nursing for permanent positions and retaining current staff. These obstacles also have brought great opportunity to re-examine practices and processes, forcing many to venture outside typical ways of hiring to create new avenues for growth. Collaborative partnerships have brought nurse leaders, academic partners, professional organizations and health care organizations together at every level to blaze a trail into the future. At Kootenai Health, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, the idea of providing enhanced training and support to experienced nurses transitioning into a new practice setting led to increased recruitment and retention with the creation of a nurse fellowship. This work eventually became the inspiration behind a novel preceptor model to triple the rate of hiring and training, while also retaining experienced nurses at bedside.
