AACN report rise in nursing program enrollments

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) released data showing increased enrollment in nursing programs in 2020. Enrollment in baccalaureate programs grew 5.6% and rose 4.1% at the master’s level and 8.9% at the doctoral level. These increases came amid concerns the COVID-19 pandemic might dissuade some from pursuing a career in nursing. Susan Bakewell-Sachs, AACN board chair, expressed pleasure about the numbers, saying: “With the pandemic ushering in a period of unprecedented change and innovation in higher education, schools of nursing moved decisively to adapt their programs to ensure a steady supply of nurses needed to join the fight against COVID-19.” (AACN article, 4/1/21)
