AI shows promise, challenges in nursing education
Nursing educators should invest time and community resources to determine how to best use generative artificial intelligence, concludes a Vanderbilt University pilot study. Published in Nursing Outlook, the study consisted of faculty and staff using an internal, generative AI chatbot tool for two months in 2024. Examples of uses included drafting job descriptions, addressing software challenges and creating quizzes and study guides. Costs were lower than $2 per month, per user. Thirty-five users generated 148 distinct case reports; 35 respondents rated technology acceptability as 5.2 out of 7.0. Users believed the projected impact is high (6.3 out of 7.0), but not entirely positive with a score of 5.9 out of 7.0. Some users raised ethical concerns, including students’ ability to engage in critical thinking. (Nursing Outlook article, 7/14/25)
