AONL member details future functions of AI-enabled smart rooms

Hospitals will use artificial intelligence-enabled smart rooms to detect pressure ulcers and prevent patients from leaving before discharge, predicts AONL member Jill Evans, MSN, RN. Evans, chief nursing informatics officer and executive director of virtual care enterprise at MetroHealth in Cleveland, says hospitals can leverage the technology to ensure rooms are ready for new patients and for voice activation for patients who need assistance. MetroHealth uses AI-enabled cameras with patient permission to detect if patients at risk for falls attempt to leave their bed. Cameras notify a technician, who reminds patients to stay in bed or calls a floor nurse to assist them. MetroHealth soon will use the AI-enabled cameras for pharmacists to provide medication education and for physicians to speak with patients after hours.  (HealthLeaders Media article, 8/31/26)
