Administration Proposes Steep Cuts to Nursing Programs

The administration’s fiscal year 2027 budget outlines steep cuts to the National Institute of Nursing Research and elimination of all Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development programs except for the Nurse Corps. The budget proposes $138.385 million for NINR, a cut of nearly $60 million. It proposes $212.837 million in reductions to the Nursing Workforce Development programs, cutting more than two-thirds of funding dedicated to current and future nurses. The Nursing Community Coalition says that while it is pleased to see NINR retained as an independent agency in this year’s blueprint, it strongly opposes reductions in funding for nursing programs and will work with Congress to pass a budget that invests in nursing education, workforce and research. AONL is one of the NCC’s 65 members. (Nursing Community Coalition statement, 4/6/26)
