Advocate Health offers tips to make nurses want to use ambient AI

AONL members Tracy Breece, MSN, RN, and Bradley Goettl, DNP, RN, contend hospitals should follow Charlotte, N.C.-based Advocate Health’s approach to enable nurses in co-designing ambient artificial intelligence deployment if they want to reduce nurse burnout. Nurses decided when to activate the tool, how to narrate care without disrupting a patient encounter and how data should flow into the electronic health record. Nurses delivering care review and edit every AI-generated draft. Breece and Goettl urge hospitals to first use the technology in simulation and design every step around the nurse’s clinical judgement. Hospitals should measure whether ambient AI returns nurses’ time to the bedside. Breece is Advocate Health’s vice president of nursing innovation, AI and emerging technologies, and Goettl is American Nurses Enterprise’s CNO. (Fierce Healthcare article, 8/7/26)
