CDC: Overdose deaths fall 27%

Drug overdose deaths fell nearly 27% in 2024 compared with 2023, according to preliminary data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, resulting in more than 81 lives saved each day. The decrease is the lowest annual amount since 2019. An estimated 80,391 people died from drug overdoses in the U.S. in 2024, compared with 110,037 deaths in 2023. Some experts fear administrative cuts to federal funding and the public health workforce or a move away from effective strategies could slow or stop the progress. Experts attribute the drug decline partially to naloxone’s greater availability. It was made available over the counter in 2023, is used by first responders and is available in public places.
