Competency-based approach needed for DNP programs

Doctorate of nursing practice programs should adopt competency-based education to prepare DNP graduates to lead evidence-based practice, quality improvement, program evaluation and policy analysis initiatives, according to an article in Nursing Outlook. The authors urge schools to implement the Mountain Model, which provides a framework aligned with national standards to differentiate DNP-prepared practice from MSN- and PhD-prepared nurses. Nursing faculty need to have the skillset to mentor students in high-impact projects and reevaluate curricula to support development connected to practice. The authors contend that “without bold curricular and faculty development reforms, the DNP graduate’s value will remain questioned.” (Nursing Outlook article, 6/28/25)
