Experts say for AI literacy instruction needed in nursing education

Interdisciplinary experts call for integrating AI literacy into graduate nursing education and applying rigorous frameworks to optimize AI deployment, in a Nursing Outlook article. The article originates from a January 2025 meeting of experts from nursing, medicine, AI and data science and ethics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Philadelphia. The group sought to outline guidelines for integrating AI into nursing science. They urge educators to develop and adopt AI competencies, noting nurse scientists must be aware of AI’s capabilities and limitations to integrate AI effectively into their scholarship. They call for a dedicated AI nursing role in clinical settings to “ensure safe, equitable and contextually grounded” AI use in care delivery and greater nurse involvement in AI innovation with industry partners.
