Hybrid NP program allows RNs to pursue advanced degree while working

Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions developed a hybrid nurse practitioner program for working nurses. The program combines online coursework with structured in-person learning intensives focused on attaining clinical skills. Megan O’Neil, DNP, RN, program director of the family nurse practitioner program at Rocky Mountain University, said when nurses feel supported in their professional growth, an organization’s retention improves, leadership pathways strengthen and the workforce is more engaged and skilled. CNOs who want to provide career advancement opportunities for nurses at the bedside can create transparent pathways enabling nurses to remain connected to their organization while pursuing advanced education. CNOs can offer tuition reimbursement, foster academic partnerships and provide flexible scheduling. (HealthLeaders Media article, 2/25/26)
