Intermountain Health to increase nurses’ time with patients to 42%
Intermountain Health nursing leaders are revamping its care model to increase the share of time nurses spend with patients from 24% to 42%. A time-motion study of more than 7,000 observation’s across the Salt Lake City-based system’s med-surg units showed nurses spent most of their non-patient care time on charting and other computer work, medication administration and care coordination. System leaders collaborated with 150 nurses and patient care technicians to find the best ways to transform workflows. They also deployed technology to decrease routine work. AONL member Mandy Richards, DNP, RN, Intermountain CNE and Intermountain Children’s Health president, says she wants to enable nurses to spend less time navigating unnecessary work and more time practicing nursing. She also wants to improve the patient care experience. (Becker’s Hospital Review article, 10/21/26)
