Interprofessional collaboration key to successful practice redesign

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital relied on interprofessional collaboration to address overcrowding in the emergency department and patient boarding. Cori Loescher, MM, RN, the Boston hospital’s CNO and vice president for patient care services, brought together a multidisciplinary team of clinicians to determine which hallways the hospital could place additional patients in and which rooms it could successfully double up. Loescher, an AONL member, stressed the importance of being open and listening to ideas and then systematically vetting options. In addition, she said testing and piloting a redesign and making continual changes based on findings are crucial to practice redesign success. (HealthLeaders Media article, 3/20/23)
