Joint Commission issues advisory on severe pressure injuries

To assist bedside nurses in preventing pressure injuries from becoming more severe, the Joint Commission this week issued a Quick Safety advisory on how to identify and evaluate severe pressure injuries early. The advisory explains common risk factors for developing pressure injuries. It lists signs of a severe pressure injury that, if present, demonstrate a need for a surgical consult. It also describes actions organizations can take to help clinicians accurately identify the depth of a pressure injury as early as possible. The advisory can be reproduced if credited to the Joint Commission. (Joint Commission news release, 10/10/23)
