LifePoint Health nurse residency program decreases turnover
Since launching a residency program for new nurses in 2023, LifePoint Health has decreased its less-than-one year residency turnover by 65% and retained 86% of residents it hires, says AONL member Michelle Watson, MSN, RN, CNE and senior vice president of clinical operations. The Brentwood, Tenn.-based system started the program at 23 hospitals and has since expanded it to all 60 of its facilities, with 800 nurses participating. Nurse residents join a cohort with peer nurses and a dedicated preceptor to receive additional education and build community. Last year, LifePoint started an RN fellows program at 23 facilities for more experienced nurses to advance their education and earn national certification in acute care, critical care, emergency care, perinatal care or perioperative care.
