Many nurses expressing desire to leave positions stayed

An AMN Healthcare survey conducted in January 2023 found 85% of hospital nurses planned to quit within the next 12 months, but that did not happen. Christin Sanford, MS, AMN’s vice president of client solutions, believes the mass exodus did not occur because hospitals prioritized retention efforts, including offering flexible schedules and virtual nursing positions. Others provided financial support and scheduling adjustments for continuing education. Hospitals also offered sign-on and retention bonuses for nurses. However, Sanford notes nurses have many workplace options and will leave negative work environments. She predicts hospitals with the most success at retaining nurses will prioritize the amount of time nurses spend at the bedside. AMN plans to repeat the nurse survey in 2025.
