Model highlight’s nursing’s economic value

Nursing leaders must highlight nursing’s economic value to health care organizations by quantifying and demonstrating nursing’s contribution to revenue margins and return on investment, states an article in the December issue of Journal of Nursing Administration. The authors discuss a model to guide nurse leaders in identifying value-informed leadership strategies and tactics showing nursing’s contributions to better patient and organizational financial outcomes. The authors maintain nurse leaders who use the model will refute the prevailing notion of nursing as a cost driver. Health care organizations, in turn, will invest in nursing to secure and ensure a productive workforce. The authors call for additional research quantifying nursing’s return on investment, as well as for educators to teach the economic value of nursing at the undergraduate level.
