NIH establishes Maternal Health Research Centers of Excellence

The National Institutes of Health awarded $24 million to establish 10 Maternal Health Research Centers for Excellence at universities, medical schools and Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. The centers will conduct research to reduce pregnancy-related complications and deaths and promote maternal health equity. They will form partnerships with community collaborators, including state and local public health agencies, community health centers and faith-based organizations. The research centers also will support training and professional development of maternal health researchers, including those from backgrounds underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce.
