NIH makes research studies publicly available

The National Institutes of Health announced all NIH-funded research published in scientific journals must be made publicly accessible immediately upon release. The move accelerates a policy enacted in 2024 and originally set to begin in December. Previously, many NIH-funded studies in journals were password-protected and not widely available to nonsubscribers. The NIH says making the research publicly accessible immediately upon release will increase confidence in NIH-funded research and ensure investments made by taxpayers “produce replicable, reproducible and generalizable results that benefit all Americans.” (NIH X post, 7/3/25)
