Podcast explains how NYC Health + Hospitals reversed low nurse retention

In an American Hospital Association podcast, AONL member Natalia Cineas, DNP, RN, discusses how NYC Health + Hospitals reversed its nurse turnover rate from a staggering 46% in 2019 to 7% in 2025. Cineas, senior vice president and CNE at the health system, attributes the turnaround to a new nurse residency program, mentorship and creating a culture of empowerment. Nurse residency graduates mentor newer nurses. The system established more than 200 professional governance councils. Cineas says she and her nurse leadership team listened to front-line nurses and partnered with their labor unions to establish meaningful programs and improve engagement. The system also offers five Pathway to Excellence positive practice environment designated sites. She stresses the importance of communication and staying connected to front-line nurses.
