Preceptor, Nurse Corps. tax relief bills introduced

Sens. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., and Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., introduced the bipartisan PRECEPT Nurses Act (S. 1627). The AONL-supported legislation would provide a $2,000 tax credit for nurses to serve as clinical preceptors to students and recent hires. In addition, Sens. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Patty Murray, D-Wash., Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and John Boozman, R-Ark., re-introduced the Nurse Corps Tax Parity Act (S. 1446). The legislation would stipulate that nurses in the Nurse Corps. would no longer be required to pay federal income tax on their student loan forgiveness and scholarships. The policy change would align the program with the National Health Service Corps., which does not require recipients to pay taxes on their student loan forgiveness and scholarships (Rep. Kelly news release, 5/16/23)
