Republican lawmakers expected to keep NIH funding at previous levels
House and Senate Republicans are expected to keep funding at the National Institutes of Health at previous levels, despite the president’s budget request to slash NIH funding to $27.9 billion, about $18 billion lower than fiscal year 2025 enacted levels. Republican lawmakers cited the importance of investing in medical research to control long-term health costs and get cures to the American people. Earlier this week, Republicans frustrated with the administration’s delay of releasing already appropriated NIH funding asked Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought to distribute all funds as Congress directed. The administration then released $15 billion for scientific research at NIH. (Roll Call article, 7/28/25)
