Republican senator signals need to exempt hospitals from H-1B visa fee

Sen. Shelley Moore Caputo, R-W.V., said the H-1B visa program is critical to health care delivery in rural areas. She noted hospitals have asked her to push the Trump administration to exempt health care personnel from a policy he announced earlier this month to charge companies $100,000 to employ each H-1B visa holder. Nearly 25% of the nation’s physicians are international medical graduates, with West Virginia, North Dakota and Iowa employing the highest percentages of international physicians through the H-1B visa program. The American Hospital Association has asked the administration to exempt health care personnel from the policy. (Politico article, 10/2/25)
