Researchers release nursing best practices for LGBTQ+ adults
An article in the September issue of the American Journal of Nursing reviews best practices for person-centered care of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning individuals. The authors describe LGBTQ+ terminology and discuss how intersectionality affects health care. They describe practical considerations in inpatient settings, including recognition of chosen families, strategies to support patient health care autonomy, effective bedside handoffs and transition considerations. The authors also discuss the social, ethical, legal and accreditation implications for nursing practice when caring for LGBTQ+ individuals.
