Study: AI could help EDs to predict admissions

Artificial intelligence can aid emergency department teams in better anticipating which patients will be admitted hours earlier than is currently possible, according to one of the largest prospective AI evaluations in emergency settings. Published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health, the Mount Sinai Health System study occurred in EDs at six hospitals. Researchers and 500 ED nurses evaluated a machine-learning model trained on data from more than one million past patient visits. They compared over two months of AI-generated predictions with nurses’ triage assessment, finding the AI model performed reliably across diverse hospital settings in determining likely hospital admissions soon after a patient arrives. Knowing which patients are likely to be admitted sooner could enhance patient care and reduce overcrowding and boarding, the researchers say. (Newswise news release, 8/11/25)
