Study: APRNs ‘critical’ to improving patient safety culture

Advanced practice registered nurses were “critical” in promoting patient safety culture and organizational efforts to prevent adverse events, particularly when focused on interprofessional teamwork, a systematic integrative review found. Published this week in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Journal of Patient Safety Network, the review included 16 studies published from 2014 to 2023. The authors believe their findings can be used to promulgate policies and guidelines enhancing APRN roles within the interprofessional team to improve patient quality and safety. Health care institutions should provide resources to enable APRNs to take on leadership roles in patient care in long-term and community care settings, the authors say.
