Study: Tool enables nurse managers to determine hiring needs

A Duke University software tool used by nurse managers to determine RN hiring needs proactively improved workforce stability and nurse manager satisfaction, a pilot study found. Published in the Journal of Nursing Administration July/August issue, the researchers believe that technology could be the “missing piece for achieving workforce stability.” The researchers compared workforce stability and nurse manager satisfaction on 12 units using a web-based workforce management tool, and 12 units not using it at three hospitals for six months. The study concludes the staffing software may reduce RN vacancies and the use of travel RNs, as well as improve nurse manager satisfaction and stability.
