Study analyzes impact of Providence’s ambient AI
Providence Health System’s use of ambient artificial intelligence reduced the time clinicians spent taking notes, suggesting the technology may improve administrative efficiency, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. While ambient AI did not result in an immediate decline in after-hours documentation at the Renton, Wash.-based system, the researchers observed a statistically significant sustained decline in minutes spent documenting after hours. They hypothesize clinicians reviewed notes after hours to ensure they were correct, but as the AI became more integrated into their workflow, they spent less time reviewing notes outside of work hours. The study, which occurred between July 1, 2023, and March 31, 2025, also found Providence did not require clinicians to see more patients due to their increased efficiency.
