Zangerle, Carlucci discuss how hospitals can improve nurse manager role
AONL CEO Claire Zangerle, DNP, RN, says health systems can improve the nurse manager position by paying attention to the managers’ span of control ─ or number of direct reports the nurse manager oversees ─ and remove responsibilities that can be automated, delegated or reassigned. Examples may include supply counts, payroll, scheduling and human resource coordination. AONL member and CNE Ashley Carlucci, DNP, RN, says Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network’s leadership coursework prepares nurses for leadership roles before vacancies open and helps them succeed in manager positions. Allegheny helps managers to delegate and set limits on their availability. Smaller organizations can offer nurse managers mentorship and structured opportunities to connect with peers, Carlucci says.
