Zangerle Offers Insights to Retain Nurses, Nurse Managers
To retain nurses, AONL CEO Claire Zangerle, DNP, RN, says hospitals must compensate them adequately and nurture them early in their careers. Managers should check in regularly with younger nurses to help them grow, ensuring they are not overwhelmed. Hospitals also can facilitate regular check-ins by ensuring nurse managers are not overseeing too many people. If nurse managers are supervising 90 or more direct reports, turnover rates among newer nurses reach up to 40%, according to a recent report from AONL and Laudio. Zangerle noted AONL is focused helping health care leaders to retain nurse managers and encourage front-line nurses to consider nurse manager positions. Zangerle also serves as American Hospital Association CNE and senior vice president. (Chief Healthcare Executive article, 5/20/25/)
