AHA releases brief on de-escalation strategies

The American Hospital Association released an issue brief on how evidence-based de-escalation strategies can help hospitals prevent violence, improve safety and strengthen trust among patients, families and the workforce. Drawing on research, implementation guidance and real-world examples from member organizations, it provides practical steps for integrating de-escalation into comprehensive workplace-violence prevention efforts. Case studies include Charlotte, N.C.-based Advocate Health’s data-driven approach, St. Louis Children’s behavioral assessment response team to identify and support patients at increased risk for behavioral escalation using structured assessment tools and relationship-based interventions, and Roanoke, Va.-based Carilion Clinic’s integration of behavioral health security specialists into patient care.
