One of the greatest privileges of leading AONL’s Leadership Development team is seeing the many ways nurse leaders influence healthcare. Our members lead across hospitals, ambulatory settings, academic institutions, community organizations, industry and beyond. What unites them is not a particular title or setting, but a shared commitment to bringing the perspective, values and expertise of nursing into leadership. That belief continues to shape how we think about leadership development at AONL.

Over the past two years, our team has focused on building the foundation to support nurse leaders in new and meaningful ways. In 2026, that work came to life through the launch of the AONL Microlearning Hub, continued growth in our conferences and leadership programs and strategic collaborations that have expanded access to innovative content to reach a broader audience of leaders. These efforts reflect AONL’s commitment to preparing leaders for today and tomorrow while creating opportunities for innovation and knowledge exchange across the care continuum.

As the organization behind the AONL Core Competencies for Nurse Leaders, we have a unique responsibility and opportunity to translate the evidence, expertise and leadership principles behind the framework into learning experiences that support meaningful growth. As we look ahead to 2027, we are focused on expanding access, increasing flexibility and delivering greater value. Our new approach will empower members to personalize their leadership journey and engage with development opportunities that support their individual growth. We are bringing more development opportunities directly to organizations and chapters while continuing to strengthen the competencies leaders need to influence strategic and operational decisions that improve health outcomes.  

Nurse leadership continues to evolve, but our purpose remains the same: equipping leaders wherever they lead. Whether you are leading direct patient care, a department, a health system, a professional practice team, an academic program or any other environment, AONL is committed to helping you grow, connect and thrive.
