A SWAT Story

Specialized workforce for acute transport (SWAT) is a 24/7 clinical department operating within Michigan Medicine’s critical care nursing division at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. The medical center complex in Ann Arbor includes the University Hospital, University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Frankel Cardiovascular Center and Rogel Cancer Center.

The SWAT department’s primary mission is to provide best-in-class comprehensive intra-hospital transport (IHT) and procedural sedation. SWAT covers the entire medical center complex with a focus on providing support to 21 moderate care units, eight service line-specific adult ICUs, five neonatal and pediatric ICUs and more than 40 procedural areas.

This department is comprised of highly experienced nurses and paramedics. Minimum qualifications include three to five years of adult and pediatric critical care experience, in addition to emergency care, transport or flight experience. SWAT team members must be well rounded; essential characteristics include exceptional clinical skills, effective problem-solving strategies and the ability to work collaboratively, demonstrating expertise in interpersonal skills.
