2025 FAONL Spotlight: Melissa Fritz

What motivated you to apply for the FAONL designation?
I applied for the FAONL designation through AONL because I am deeply passionate about shaping the future of nursing and giving back to a profession that has given so much to me. Throughout my career, I have been driven by a commitment to elevate nursing leadership and advance nursing practice, education, and advocacy within our field. This designation represents more than a personal milestone: it is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to AONL's mission, vision and to collaborate with like-minded leaders who are equally dedicated to the progress of our profession. I am especially committed to actively supporting my state’s nursing leadership organization, MOLN, recognizing the importance of strong regional engagement in advancing AONL's strategic goals. Moreover, I believe in the power of mentorship and am devoted to guiding and developing the next generation of nursing leaders. It is my goal to create pathways and opportunities for emerging nurse leaders so that we can sustain and enhance the vital work of our profession for years to come. The FAONL designation aligns with my commitment to leadership, service, and lifelong learning, and I am eager to contribute to this community of distinguished nurse leaders.

How has being an FAONL designee impacted your leadership journey and leadership style?
Although I have recently been inducted as a FAONL designee, it has already been a truly meaningful and impactful experience. It has opened the door to new conversations, connections, and opportunities to share and reflect on what it means to be a nurse leader. Engaging with others who are curious about the designation has deepened my own understanding of its significance and inspired me to further invest in the future of our profession. In terms of leadership style, becoming a FAONL designee has strengthened my alignment with servant leadership. I feel an even greater responsibility to mentor emerging leaders and support the growth of those around me. The designation has reaffirmed the importance of leading with humility, empathy, and a strong focus on developing others. It has clarified my purpose as a leader, not just to guide, but to serve, and to help create space for the next generation of nursing leaders to thrive.

What value have you received by achieving your FAONL designation (could be professional growth, personal connections, etc.)?
Since receiving the designation, I have found myself engaged in a number of insightful conversations and connections with colleagues who are curious about what the FAONL designation represents. These interactions have opened the door to deeper discussions about nursing leadership, professional development, and the collective responsibility we share in shaping the future of our profession. The recognition has also expanded my professional network and introduced me to fellow nurse leaders who share the same passion and commitment to advancing the nursing profession. This sense of community and shared purpose has been both energizing and inspiring. I am also learning from these new connections, hearing fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and different approaches to leadership. Nursing is a lifelong learning journey, and these interactions are continuing to help me grow!

What advice would you give to someone working towards achieving FAONL status?
My advice to anyone working toward achieving FAONL status is to start early and give yourself plenty of time to thoughtfully reflect on your leadership journey. The application process is a valuable opportunity to look back on your contributions, growth, and impact, but it does take time to organize and articulate those experiences meaningfully. Also, have the courage to apply! It is easy to second-guess yourself or wonder if you have done “enough,” but if you are committed to nursing leadership, mentoring others, and advancing the profession, your work matters, and it is worth sharing. The FAONL designation is not just a recognition of where you are, but a statement of your commitment to the future of nursing leadership. Believe in the value you bring to our profession, and don’t be afraid to take that step forward!
