Nurse leaders testify before Congress

Congressional leaders heard from nurses last week who took part in two separate hearings on Capital Hill. Angela Gray, BSN, RN, spoke before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform about the impact of the opioid epidemic in West Virginia, where she practices. She called out delays in federal dollars reaching community programs, saying no grant money from the historic opioid recovery and treatment law enacted last October has reached her community. Monica McLemore, PhD, RN, incoming chair of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Section of the American Public Health Association, spoke at a hearing on Title X, the federal family planning program. Her remarks addressed how proposed changes to Title X would impact public health goals, the professional and ethical responsibilities of providers, health care innovation and costs.
