AONL Salary Survey Finds Gender Parity Among Nurse Leaders

AONL has released the results of the third AONL Salary and Compensation Study for Nurse Leaders. The study surveyed nurse leaders in a wide range of settings. Almost 70 percent of respondents worked in acute care hospitals or academic medical centers. The average annual salary was $162,466. Nurse leaders employed at consulting firms and at system/corporate offices, roughly 5 percent of respondents, had the highest salaries. In contrast to salary trends in other fields, the survey did not find a gender gap between the salaries of men and women. That said, the report notes that “male respondents were slightly more likely than female respondents to report holding the title of non-system CNO/CNE, indicating greater future earning potential.” A full 70 percent of respondents reported that they were eligible for bonuses or incentive pay. This was especially true for C-suite executives and CNOs. The survey also looked at benefits, job satisfaction and career prospects for nurse leaders. (AONL study, June 2019)
