AHA podcast explores proactive approach to reduce workplace violence
In an American Hospital Association podcast, a senior leader at Hospital Sisters Health System in Springfield, Ill., discusses how its 13 hospitals prioritize workplace violence prevention. The system teaches de-escalation techniques. It requires leaders to take a mental health first aid certification course ─ also offered to employees ─ to become adept at recognizing trauma among patients, family members, employees and community members. When violence occurs, the health system documents incidents, allows affected employees to take paid time off, and requires leaders to check in with them after they return. The leadership team evaluates its workplace violence data and takes steps to minimize incidents. The AHA soon will release a case study detailing Hospital Sisters Health System’s experience in reducing workplace violence.
