CIDRAP to issue new public health alerts to fill gaps in CDC’s MMWR
Public Health Alerts, a new open-access publication led by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, will soon publish critical public health information in the New England Journal of Medicine to fill gaps in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Report. The CDC has not published the MMWR since Sept. 25 due to the Department of Health and Human Services placing all MMWR employees on furlough during the government shutdown. During previous shutdowns, HHS permitted a skeletal crew to publish the MMWR. Overall, the CDC is publishing less content this year, due to layoffs and the perception of risk of increased scrutiny. In May, CIDRAP started the Vaccine Integrity Project to safeguard U.S. vaccine use. (AABB news release, 10/22/25)
