CMS proposed rule would cut remote patient monitoring

A Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services proposed rule would cut remote patient monitoring services for Medicare patients. The rule would stop Medicare reimbursements for providers who use health technology companies to administer remote monitoring for their patients. Medicare would pay clinicians only when the facility where they work provides remote patient monitoring. CMS says it wants to address fraud, a lack of data collection and patients’ not receiving treatment from the clinician who prescribed the remote monitoring device, but the rule will disproportionately affect rural facilities that lack resources to staff remote patient monitoring positions. Health policy experts acknowledge the need for additional regulation but disagree with CMS’ approach. More than 230 vendors, healthcare systems, and patient and medical advocacy groups oppose the cuts. (KFF News article, 10/26/28)
