ChatGPT can address nurse-scheduling challenges, study finds
A UI Health cardiology clinic used ChatGPT-4.0 with human oversight to address nurse-scheduling challenges, according to an article in the April issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration. The Chicago-based clinic employed the artificial intelligence tool to implement flexible schedules for its nursing staff. The clinic used a four-day, 10-hour schedule and a five-day, eight-hour schedule for a total of 30-nurse days per week. The model could not account for absences but alerted the nurse manager to potential problems. The nurse manager ensured the schedule provided adequate role-specific coverage, fairness and clinical coverage requirements. The authors say ChatGPT-4.0 provided speed, transparency and an ability to explore multiple solutions, but it requires clear parameters, prompt engineering and human oversight to ensure equitable and safe outcomes.
