Hand-off tool reduces adverse events, study finds

A study found using I-PASS, a structured handoff tool, decreased major and minor adverse events and improved communication between providers across provider types and settings. Published in this month’s Journal of Hospital Medicine, the study included 735 resident physicians and 760 faculty champions from multiple specialties at 32 hospitals. Major and minor handoff-related report adverse events declined 47% following implementation. (AHRQ Patient Safety Network article, 11/10/22)
