John Muir Health finds generative AI saves nurses time

John Muir Health’s generative artificial intelligence tool creates end-of-shift summaries that capture what nurses documented, their flow sheets and medications they administered. During the second and third quarters, nurses generated nearly 100,000 shift-care plan notes. An AI-generated note takes 90 seconds to generate, save and review, compared with 10 minutes to write and review a manual note. Nurses edit about 3-4% of the AI-generated text, which a leader said suggests nurses are reviewing the information and ensuring it is clinically accurate and unbiased. The Walnut Creek, Calif.-based health system plans to assess how nurses are spending the time they are saving. Separately, a Wolters Kluwer’s survey found nurses are using AI mainly to cut administrative work and improve patient communication, rather than direct clinical care.
