Melnyk discusses role as chief wellness officer

Bernadette Melnyk, PhD, APRN, plans to focus on fixing stressful conditions that cause burnout, depression and lower staffing levels as Ohio State University’s vice president for health promotion and chief wellness officer. She says executives must address systemic issues, including appropriate staffing, work overload and problems with electronic health records that take nurses away from the bedside. She stresses the need for health executives to “create wellness cultures where our staff can thrive.” Melnyk, an AONL member, is the former dean of the OSU College of Nursing.
