More hospitals recognize nurses should shape AI strategies, leader says

AONL member Brad Goettl, DNP, RN, says more hospitals recognize nurses should be involved in shaping artificial intelligence strategies. Goettl, the CNO of American Nurses Enterprise, says healthcare systems should seek nurses’ advice on which technologies to adopt to garner their support in implementing AI into practice. Nurses, who are closest to patients, can identify potential problems. Nurses also should be involved in governance to ensure they understand how their health system plans to use the tools and data and train the models. He says hospitals should view AI as a tool to help nurses and not one to replace them. The American Nurses Enterprise received $5 million from Google and the Johnson & Johnson Foundation to build AI skills in the nursing workforce (Chief Healthcare Executive article, 9/10/26)
