Practice environment scale gets national endorsement
The Partnership for Quality Measurement endorsed the Practice Environment Scale ─ Five-Item Composite (PES-5), making it a national health care quality measure. Developed by AONL member and 2025 AONL Foundation Nurse Researcher Award recipient Eileen Lake, PhD, RN, the PES-5 measurement is a concise nurse survey tool that evaluates the quality of nurse work environments across five key domains: staffing and resource adequacy, leadership, nurse participation in hospital affairs, interprofessional collaboration and a nursing philosophy of patient care. It provides actionable, reliable and meaningful hospital-level data to health care leaders and front-line staff, allowing them to monitor and improve work environments. Lake is associate director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in Philadelphia. (Newswise news release, 9/22/25)
